Unity Students compete, receive recognition across the State Science Olympiad: 15 students from Unity took part in Science Olympiad this year on March 17 at GVSU. Their competition placed them against 25 other West Michigan High School’s in 23 different events ranging from ecology, astronomy & forensics, to a mousetrap vehicle, herpetology, and mission possible. This year’s team was coached by Jen Koning, Brian Mast & Steve Pohler. Team members: Jonney Boelema, Jennette Frens, Henry Kloosterman, William Terpstra, Cole VandenBosch, Jared DeVille, Jake Hofstee, Samuel Kuipers, Jacob Broene, Brendon Hoekstra, Austin Novokawski, Linda Ruan, Ashton Senti, Eli VanDyke, & Nathan VanderMeer. Congratulations to Ashton Senti & Eli VanDyke who finished 2nd in the “Helicopters” competition. Michigan Math Challenge: On March 24, Unity had 2 teams of 6 students from the freshman and sophomore classes, compete in the annual Michigan Math Challenge at GRCC. They competed against teams from 17 other West Michigan Schools. The teams worked together through 4 different events of Team Theme, Pony Express, Written Quest & Relay Rounds. Team Members: Kelsey Brinks, Sam Kuipers, Josh DeWindt, Mackenzie Luurtsema, Jennette Frens, Alison Hoekstra, Megan Velzen, Kailyn Skogmo, Nathan Steinfort, Alex Walters, Jordyn DeJong & Morgan Ridder. Youth In Government: The annual Youth in Government convention was held in Lansing February 22-25. Unity Teacher Brent Johnson headed up the Unity team as they participated in the competition for the 22nd time this year. Franklin Cook, David Cremer, Sam Kuipers & Sarah Terpstra all from Unity participated and were joined by Raenah Lindsay from East Grand Rapids for the 4 day event. Throughout the 4 days, students play the roles of legislators writing and proposing bills and drafting legislation. Students can also participate in a Mock Judiciary Process. The 4 day convention ends with a Saturday night banquet for all the participants, where they find out which legislation from the entire group of 400 students passed. Chamber Strings & Orchestra: Unity’s Orchestra program competed in the State Solo & Ensemble Festival on Saturday March 17. All of the Unity participants received a first or second division rating. This year’s participants are: Sydney Freerksen, Ashley Freerksen, Madeline Bronson, Nolan Snoeyink, Micah Huisman, Grace VanderHart, Dani Vanderwal, Megan Velzen & Brad Walters. Special congratulations to Ashley Freerksen (violin), for making the Michigan Youth Arts Festival & qualifying to play with the State Honor Orchestra. Ashley will be going to Western Michigan University, May 10-12 with others who qualified from around the state in the Honors Orchestra. Unity Bands: Congratulations to Ashley Mulder (clarinet) for receiving the highest possible rating at the State Solo & Ensemble performance on March 17.
