Boys Soccer Captures District Title in Shootout

Sometimes 80 minutes of soccer isn’t enough. Sometimes the extra 20 minutes of overtime isn’t enough either. The Unity boys soccer team used all 100 minutes of soccer and then a shootout to defeat Covenant Christian in their MHSAA D3 District Finals game on Saturday morning. Unity struck late in the 2nd half when Logan Kunnen found Blake Bruursema with 13 minutes left to put Unity up 1-0. Covenant wouldn’t go away and managed to find the back of the net with 2 minutes left to force the game into overtime. After 2 scoreless overtime periods, the game went to shootout. The 2 teams traded goals and saves for the first 5 shooters, and moved to a sudden death 1 v 1 shootout. It finally took until the 8th kicker to break the tie. Covenant Christian put the ball wide of goal on their attempt, and Unity Sophomore Adryn Byl stepped up and knocked in his shot off the post to claim the District crown.

Unity now moves to the Regional Championships next week which will be hosted at GR Catholic Central. Unity will play South Christian in the Regional Semi-Final at 7:00pm on Tuesday night, October 24.
